Information and News for Parents

March 10th, 2010

Family Fun Night - Thursday, March 18th is our first “Family Fun Night.” We will show the movie “The Princess and the Frog” in the auditorium. The doors will open at 6:30PM and the movie will begin promptly at 7PM. The admission price of $5 covers the cost of the movie, a bottle of water, popcorn and a raffle ticket. Other items will be sold in the kitchen.

This special event is intended to be a fun evening of entertainment for the whole family. It is not a “Drop Off” event. A flyer is included with the newsletter.

Weather and Apparel - With the arrival of the nicer weather, it is still important for students to dress appropriately for school. The mornings are chilly and the afternoons are warm. Therefore, coats and/or sweaters are still needed for outdoor recess.

Science Lab Update - On Monday, March 8th, our new demonstration table for the Science Lab arrived. The table includes electrical outlets and digital connections for a computer.

Thank you to everyone who has assisted in making this project so successful, especially Mr. John Dignam.

Fund Raising Made Easy - A few weeks ago I wrote about an easy way for everyone to raise money for our school. Good Search is an Internet Search Engine powered by Yahoo! The idea is a simple one. Whenever you are looking for something on the Internet you would go to www.goodsearch.com, enter our school as the charity you wish to support and then enter your search query. What could be simpler?

Here is what could be simpler! GoodSearch provides a toolbar that you can download to your computer, instructions are on the website. After downloading the toolbar, you can search right from your browser without going to www.goodsearch.com.

The reason I bring this up again is that this is a way that everyone, students, parents, family and community members can help St. Joseph's without doing anything different than they are currently doing. No fuss, no muss!

Another great opportunity that Good Search provides is GoodShop. Whenever you shop online, you can raise money for St. Joseph's using www.GoodShop.com. A percentage of your purchase will be donated to St. Joseph's. This feature is also built into the toolbar. Here is just a sample of the over 1,000 stores that partner with GoodShop:

  • 1-800-Flowers
  • Avon
  • Apple Store
  • Banana Republic
  • Best Buy
  • Crate & Barrel
  • Amazon
  • Dell
  • eBay
  • Barnes & Noble
  • Bloomingdales

The potential is unlimited. I ask you to consider using this option for all your future online purchases.

GoodSearch is just one of many ways you can help our school by doing the things you already do. There is the Target Red Card, Box Tops for Education, and Stop & Shop to name a few. Thank you for your continued support.

Laptops - Last week we received a donation of 11 Dell laptops. Thank you to all the parents who offered to travel to New York City and pick them up for us. Mr. and Mrs. Kastberg were the “lucky” couple who had the “privilege” of bringing them out of the city. Thank you very much to both of them.

These laptops have now replaced the old desktop computers in the First, Second and Third Grade classrooms. We have also been able to add two laptops to the Kindergarten classroom.

If further donations become available and need to be picked up, I will be sure to let everyone know.

Breakfast Program - The breakfast program is underway. Students dropped off by car or who are in the Before School Program may purchase breakfast for $1.40.

Students dropped off by bus may also participate in the Breakfast program starting this Monday, March 8th. Buses that arrive prior to 8:15AM will be allowed to drop off students if the students are purchasing breakfast.

Daylight Savings Time begins on March 14th!
